Access to Health Care

At the Community Health Improvement Council Meeting held in Tampa, FL earlier this week, a consensus was reached that suprisingly it isn’t a lack of doctors and other providers which is limiting access to health care for many residents. Instead, it is the ability to get to those doctors and specialists. Transportation appears to be one of the biggest stumbling blocks for Tampa area citizens, and experts assert that having all of the community provided services in the world won’t matter if residents can’t get to them. Other issues discovered in the meeting were the large number of foreign born residents who are not receiving care, as well as many children. Other problems included health insurance which was too expensive for working, single parents, lack of vision and dental coverage, and lack of mental health assistance. Do you think these types of forums are a good way for communities to make improvements in the structure of their public health care and other important community programs?
