Government Assistance with Cobra May Not Be Enough
While a large part of Obama’s recent stimulus package is focused on helping the unemployed keep health insurance by way of subsidizing the normally high cost of COBRA, it may not be enough for everyone. For a family in Florida facing unemployment, the normal cost of COBRA would be approx $1000 a month. Even with the government picking up the bulk of the cost at about 65%, that still leaves the family trying to find $350 a month to pay for health insurance. This may still be well out of reach for many. Reportedly, only less than 10% of people who qualify for COBRA coverage actually take advantage of it. Should this be a case where Florida steps in to offer further assistance? Would Florida be able to find the funding to do this?
