Health insurance requires prior authroziation on mental health
The Health insurance carrier Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida has ordered that mental health care providers must get prior authorization for the visit, except in emergencies, before treating patients. This has been the policy for HMO holders for a while but it is now a new requirement for millions of Floridians and is causing doctors grief. Doctors are complaining that this adds another layer of red tape or complications to a simple mental health Dr. visit. They say that is slows down the time it takes to get a patient seen with a psychiatrist and it creates a barrier that places limitations on treatment. Many of the psychiatrist offices do not have the staff and time to obtain prior authorizations. The psychiatrists state that we need to focus more on the patient’s immediate mental issues rather than wasting time on bureaucratic paper work. Do you agree?

Probably a good idea due to the high number of PCP doctors prescribing psych meds and they don’t know anything about them.

It is not unreasonable for this to be required in non-emergency situations.
