New Middle Ground Options for Health Insurance

A new law is being put in place which will enable health insurance carriers to negotiate with the State Insurance Commissioner’s Office to develop new plans. These plans would provide an affordable option to people who do not qualify for Medicaid, but are unable to afford coverage on their own. In working with the Commissioner’s Office, the carriers would create plans which exclude certain coverages normally required by statute. The focus of this law is to target the working poor who are employed but either can’t afford employer sponsored coverage or are not offered such coverage. Many are skeptical that the law will not work as people will end up with such limited coverage that it is hardly worth having. Florida has been criticized for its attempts at such coverage. Do you think such a plan could ever be successful?
