Oversights Cost Lives in Health Care Industry
America’s health care industry has been called archaic in the respect that it’s largely paper based and fraught with clerical errors. There is a lack of effective communication and record keeping from one practice to another, meaning that patients often receive redundant care, or miss receiving necessary care. As a result, there are an estimated 100,000 deaths a year due to medical error or oversight, which could have been prevented with better record keeping. Our health care system is also faulted for doing very little toward prevention, which could lead to a dramatic decrease in chronic illness and death. The improvement of our health care system needs to involve more than just making it accessible and affordable. We need to target prevention, implement a comprehensive record keeping system, and make physicians and their assistants more accountable for their patients’ safety.
