Subsidize private insurers to take clients with pre-existing conditions (there needs to be sufficient data to regulate the level of subsidy based on the specific condition) who would otherwise be declined. Have an income test for subsidizing with verification (This is a tough one as many don't report cash income, etc). Make sure subsidies are for "true" major medical insurance policies that include a strong preventative care component. I think this approach would allow the current health care insurers to expand coverage to all while we (the insured public) still get a competative marketplace I agree with Brian. In my opinion, if the governemnt get involved it should be in a limited capacity to help the private sector, not replace it. I could see the government taking a roll similar to the roll they take in the mortgage arena by underwriting the private carriers to reduce the risk to them. Let the government take on the roll or re-insurer instead of a primary insurer. I think a blend is the answer to the health care problem.
