Students Involved in Health Insurance Issues
For a first year medical student at Florida State University, to see a fellow student suffer not only from a potentially deadly blood clot, but then to suffer the financial repurcusions of not having health insurance, it has inspired her to get involved. The engineering student is now facing a $3,000 bill which encompasses a $900 ambulance ride, and having no health insurance, he is required to pay it out of pocket. Natasha Demerhi and fellow med students recognize the issues they will have to face as physicians in the future and have gotten involved in Cover the Uninsured Week which kicks off Tuesday. The week will begin with a discussion featuring Bob Brooks, dean of health affairs, who hopes that getting students aware and involved will make a big difference in the future of health care. What impact will student awareness bring to the future?
