What Happened to Our Priorities?
A decade has passed since Florida was governed by Lawton Chiles, and it shows. Governor Chiles made it his personal crusade to secure the welfare of Florida’s children. Since his death in 1998, severe budget cuts and a shuffling of priorities has left and unbelievable number of children without proper health care coverage. One of his main issues was improving prenatal care and bringing down the high infant mortality rate. Nowadays, Florida again has one of the highest rates of infant mortality among the 50 states. Experts feel that money is being spent towards children, but just in the wrong places. A higher premium needs to be paid on prenatal care, education, and preventative care. Will Florida be able to spend more wisely and allocate funds to children in ways that will matter? What will it take for this to happen?
